Three people, including two members of the same family, were killed by electrocution following a transformer explosion in Ranglai Headmanpara, Bandarban Sadar upazila.

The tragic incident occurred around 1 AM on Sunday, July 13, in the Waijongson area of Bandarban Sadar. The victims have been identified as Orkan Mro (71), his granddaughter Tumle Mro (17), and Rulen (35), daughter-in-law of former member Chittur. All three were residents of Ranglai Chairmanpara.

According to local residents, heavy rainfall on Sunday night triggered a short circuit, causing an electric transformer to explode. The resulting electrical surge spread through the neighborhood, leading to multiple electrocution injuries and the deaths of the three victims.

Locals also reported that the transformer often malfunctions and nearly catches fire during rain. Despite repeated complaints to the electricity department, no corrective measures were taken.

Former union chairman Ranglai Mro expressed deep concern, saying, “The transformer exploded due to rain, and electricity spread into nearby homes. Sadly, three people, including my relative, died because no action was taken despite informing the authorities.” He accused the electricity department of negligence.

On Monday morning, officials from the electricity department, fire service, and law enforcement visited the scene to investigate.

Executive Engineer Masum Amir of the electricity department confirmed that staff had been dispatched to the site following reports of casualties. He stated that further details would be released after assessment.
