3 get life imprisonment for murder of Italian citizen Cesare Tavella

A Dhaka court has sentenced three individuals to life imprisonment for the murder of Italian citizen Cesare Tavella, an official of ICCO-Bangladesh, a Netherlands-based international organization. The killing occurred nearly a decade ago in the capital’s upscale Gulshan area.

The verdict was delivered at 2 PM on Thursday by Judge Sheikh Samidul Islam of the Dhaka Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court.

Those convicted are Tamjid Ahmed alias Rubel, Russell Chowdhury, and Minhajul Arefin alias Bhagne Russell. The court also acquitted four other accused due to lack of evidence.

Cesare’s murder in 2015 sparked widespread outrage both domestically and internationally, drawing attention to the safety of foreign nationals working in Bangladesh.
