Police have recovered three hanging bodies in separate incidents in the capital's Demra, Kamrangirchar and Banshal. The deceased in these incidents on Thursday are Mosammat Popi (35) of Demra, Swapna Begum (38) of Kamrangirchar and Hashem (48) of Banshal.

According to police and family members, all three incidents are primarily believed to be suicides. However, the actual cause of death will be confirmed after autopsy. Family members said two of the deceased had long been suffering from physical and mental problems.

Mosammat Popi's body was recovered from a flat on the 11th floor of Amar Bhuban building on Haji Badsha Mia Road in Demra around 2pm on Thursday. SI Mahbubur Rahman of Demra Police Station said she was found hanging inside the bathroom. The body was later sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Popi was the daughter of Delwar Hossain of Nandlalpur area in Fatullah, Narayanganj. She lived in that building with her family. Her husband, Roni, said he became suspicious when he got no response after she entered the bathroom to take a bath at noon. Later, cutting the door open with a machine, he found his wife hanging with a towel. He also said there had been no quarrel between them.

Roni said they have four children — three sons and one daughter. Their eldest son has a two-and-a-half-year-old child. Additionally, they have a two-year-old younger daughter of their own. He said they cannot understand why Popi did such a thing.

Meanwhile, Swapna Begum's hanging body was recovered from a rented house in the Jhaulahati Chourasta area of Paschim Rasulpur in Kamrangirchar around 10:30am on Thursday.

The house manager, Titu, said Swapna moved into the ground floor of the house with her family about eight months ago. Her family members had then said she was physically and mentally unwell.

Swapna's husband, Khaja, drives an auto-rickshaw. He said that while talking to his wife over the phone on Wednesday night, Swapna had asked him to return home quickly. The next morning, his son called and said his mother had hanged herself. Later, returning home, he saw his wife hanging with an orna wrapped around the ceiling fan.

SI Ariful Islam of Kamrangirchar Police Station said it is primarily believed that Swapna committed suicide in the empty house while her son and daughter were out.

On the other hand, the hanging body of a man named Hashem (48) was recovered from the fourth floor of a six-storey building on Nazim Uddin Road in Banshal. The incident took place around 10:30pm on Thursday.

Family members rescued Hashem and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 1am, where doctors declared him dead. His son, Hasib, said his father had long been mentally ill. He said his father hanged himself with an orna wrapped around a fan at his sister's house.

Inspector Habibur Rahman of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp said the bodies of all three have been kept at the hospital morgue. The exact cause of death will be known after autopsy.
