3 including mother, child killed in Rangpur road crash
Three people, including a mother and her one-year-old son, were killed early Friday when a sand-laden truck collided with a pickup van on the Rangpur–Dhaka highway.
The accident occurred around 4:00 am in the Damdama area of Rangpur city, according to Shahjahan Ali, officer-in-charge of Tajhat Police Station. Three others were injured in the crash.
The victims were identified as Arif Hossain, 20, son of Yusuf Ali of Mirganj area, who worked as the pickup van driver’s assistant; Shahina Begum, 28, wife of Motaleb Hossain from Satdarga in Pirgacha; and her one-year-old son, Walid Hossain Swadhin. Their bodies have been sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Police said the truck, traveling toward Dhaka, struck the northbound goods-laden pickup near Damdama Bridge. The impact caused the deaths of the three passengers at the scene.
Among the injured, pickup driver Nishat Mia was seriously hurt and admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. Two others, including Shahina Begum’s brother-in-law and his wife, received treatment for minor injuries.
Both vehicles have been recovered and secured at the police station, but the truck driver and his assistant remain at large. Police are investigating the incident.
