3 killed as bus hits parked-truck in Mirsharai

At least three people were killed and eight others were injured after a passenger bus crashed into the rear of a stationary timber-laden truck in the Baraiyarhat area of Mirsharai upazila in Chattogram.

The accident took place around 2:00am on Thursday (January 8) in the Dhumghat Forest Office area of Baraiyarhat municipality on the Dhaka-bound lane of the Dhaka–Chattogram highway.

The deceased were identified as Nafiz Ahmed Ayon, 18, son of Nur Alam of Masjidia area in Mirsharai, Sabitun Nahar, 25, daughter of Md Helal of Chandgaon police station area in Chattogram city and Mintu Mia, 45, son of the late Naya Bepari of Phulchhari thana in Gaibandha. Nafiz Ahmed Ayon was a member of the Bangladesh Navy.

Police and Fire Service officials said a timber-laden truck was standing on the highway at night. At that time, a Dhaka-bound double-decker sleeper bus of Saint Martin Travels lost control and rammed into the back of the truck. The bus was badly mangled, and passengers inside were thrown around, sustaining serious injuries.

After receiving the information, Fire Service and police personnel rescued the injured and took them to Mirsharai Upazila Health Complex, where on-duty doctors declared three people dead.

Borhan Uddin, sub-inspector (SI) of Jorarganj Highway Police Station, said, several others were injured and are receiving treatment at different hospitals. Police have recovered the damaged bus and truck and taken them into custody. The truck driver fled the scene after the accident.

"The bodies of the deceased will be handed over to their families after completion of legal procedures," he added.
