3 killed in bus-pickup head-on collision in Habiganj
Three people were killed in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a pickup van on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Nabiganj upazila, Habiganj. The driver of the pickup van and two others were seriously injured. The accident occurred on Monday, August 10, in the Rokonpur area of Paniunda Union in the upazila.
The deceased are: Moshud Ahammed, 40, son of Sufi Mia from Karkhana village in Dighalbak Union, Nabiganj upazila, and a vegetable trader at Inatganj Bazaar; Abul Kashem, 50, son of Myna Mia from Inatganj Dakshin village, also a vegetable trader; and Myna Mia, 30, an employee of Fahim Vegetable Store at Inatganj Bazaar.
Police and local sources said several vegetable traders and employees from Inatganj Bazaar were going to Digambar Bazaar in Bahubal upazila in a pickup van to buy vegetables. When they reached the Rokonpur area, the pickup van collided head-on with a passenger bus of Lucky Paribahan coming from the opposite direction. Moshud Ahammed died on the spot.
Locals rescued the four seriously injured, including the pickup van driver, and sent them to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Abul Kashem and Myna Mia died there while undergoing treatment in the afternoon. The pickup van driver and two others remain in critical condition at the hospital.
Upon receiving the news, Sherpur Highway Police went to the scene and removed the accident vehicles. Traffic on the highway later returned to normal. The bus was detained in the Aushkandi area after the accident. The bus and pickup van are in the custody of Highway Police.
Sherpur Highway Police Sub-Inspector Md Jasim Uddin confirmed the accident and said one person died at the scene in the head-on collision. Two others later died at the hospital in Sylhet.
