3 killed in Gazipur road crash

Three people were killed and four others injured when a truck collided head-on with a battery-powered auto-rickshaw in the Dhirasram area of Gazipur city on Wednesday afternoon.

The accident occurred around 3pm in front of Dhirasram GK Adarsha High School on the Joydebpur-Tongi regional road.

The deceased were identified as Mohiuddin, also known as Mohor Ali, 42, son of the late Abul Kasem Ali of the Hyderabad area; Jamal Hossain, 44, son of the late Abdul Malek of the same area; and an unidentified man, approximately 60 years old.

The injured were identified as Abdul Motaleb, Al Amin and Rubel. The identity of the fourth injured person could not immediately be confirmed.

According to local sources, the battery-powered auto-rickshaw was travelling from Tongi towards Joydebpur when it collided head-on with a speeding truck coming from the opposite direction. The impact left the auto-rickshaw badly mangled.

Two people died at the scene, while another critically injured passenger died on the way to hospital.

Farhad Hossain, resident medical officer (RMO) at Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, said five people were brought to the hospital following the accident. Three of them were pronounced dead on arrival, while two injured people were admitted for treatment. Rubel was taken by his relatives from the scene to a hospital in Dhaka.

Aminul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sadar Metro Police Station, said three people were killed and four injured in the collision between the truck and the battery-powered auto-rickshaw in Dhirasram.

He said all three deceased were men and, according to initial information, they were passengers in the auto-rickshaw.

Police recovered the bodies and sent them to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for autopsies.

With the help of local residents, police detained the truck driver, Mohammad Shahid Ali Sarman, 32, following the accident.

Police said legal action would be taken after an investigation into the incident.
