Three more people died of dengue in the 24 hours preceding Monday morning, raising the death toll from the mosquito-borne disease to 48 this year, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

During the same period, 492 new dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country. With the latest figures, the total number of dengue cases reported in 2024 has risen to 12,763.

Of the new cases, 154 were reported in Barishal Division (outside Dhaka city), 69 in Dhaka Division (excluding city corporations), 54 in Khulna, 61 in Rajshahi, 51 in Chattogram, 10 in Mymensingh, three in Rangpur, and one in Sylhet.

Within the capital, 36 new cases were reported from Dhaka North City Corporation and 53 from Dhaka South City Corporation.

The dengue situation remains a public health concern, especially with the ongoing monsoon season contributing to the spread of the Aedes mosquito, the primary vector of the disease.

In 2023, Bangladesh recorded its deadliest dengue outbreak, with 1,705 deaths and 321,179 cases. Of those infected, 318,749 patients recovered, according to DGHS data.

Health officials continue to urge the public to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds and seek immediate medical attention in case of symptoms.
