3 sentenced to death for gang-raping schoolgirl in Jamalpur

In a swift move for justice, a Jamalpur court today handed down the death sentence to three young men found guilty of gang-raping a schoolgirl back in 2024.

Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 delivered the verdict in a packed courtroom on Thursday morning (May 7). The convicts—Shipon, 19, Ibrahim, 25, and Yusuf Ali, 20, all hail from the Shildah area of Islampur.

The case dates back to April 19, 2024, when the trio lured the young student to an isolated spot and took turns raping her. The girl’s father filed a case immediately after, sparking a two-year legal battle.

Beyond the death penalty, the court slammed each convict with a Tk 2 lakh fine. Public Prosecutor Fazlul Haque noted that the money collected from these fines will be paid directly to the victim’s family. With nine witnesses testifying, the court found the evidence overwhelming, leading to today’s heavy-handed sentence.
