31 Awami League leaders, activists sent to jail in Jamalpur
A court has ordered 31 leaders and activists of Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League to be sent to jail in cases filed over sabotage and violence in Madarganj and Bakshiganj upazilas of Jamalpur.
The accused surrendered and applied for bail at the Jamalpur Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Monday, March 30. After a lengthy hearing, the judge ordered them to be sent to jail custody.
Among those sent to jail are – Obaidur Rahman Belal, former chairman of Madarganj Upazila Parishad; Daulatuzzaman Dulal, member of district Awami League; former UP chairman Zainal Abedin Ayna; Awami League leaders Shahidul Islam and Rashedul Islam Laju; Jubo League leaders Shafiqul Islam, Tofayel Ahmed Bahadur, Md Chhala Mia and Shahinur Rahman; and Chhatra League leaders SD Jewel and Md Salman.
Additionally, a total of 31 individuals, including Bakshiganj municipality Awami League convener Jalal Uddin, joint convener Jewel Hazari, and Merurchar union Awami League general secretary Elias Ali, were sent to jail.
Court sources said 27 leaders and activists from Madarganj upazila surrendered and applied for bail in four cases related to sabotage and violence. Meanwhile, four leaders and activists from Bakshiganj upazila surrendered and sought bail in two cases.
After hearing, the court rejected their bail applications and ordered them to be sent to jail.
Court Inspector Md Abul Hossain said the court gave this decision as the charges are non-bailable. They were later sent to the district jail.
