31 BNP leaders, activists acquitted from case in Sylhet
Some 31 leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliated organizations in Sylhet have been acquitted from a politically-motivated case filed in 2015 under the Explosives and Special Powers Act.
Sylhet Senior Judicial Magistrate 1st Court’s judge Suman Bhuiyan acquitted them from the case on Sunday (September 22) afternoon.
Abdul Mukit Opi, a member of the lawyer team for the accused, confirmed this information.
Among the acquitted leaders are Mahbub Chowdhury, former central leader of Chhatra Dal and former organizational secretary of Sylhet Metropolitan BNP, Advocate Samsuzzaman Zaman, former deputy secretary of Central BNP and former central vice-president of Swechchhasebak Dal, Shakil Murshed, member secretary of Sylhet district Swechchhasebak Dal, and Rezaul Karim Nachan, Sylhet Metropolitan BNP leader and former central co-organizing secretary of Chhatra Dal.
According to court sources, in 2015, the police filed this case under the Explosives and Special Powers Act as the plaintiff with Sylhet's Kotwali police station during the nationwide blockade movement of BNP.
BNP leader Mahbub Chowdhury in an immediate reaction after the announcement of the verdict said that many injustices have been committed by the judiciary during the fascist Sheikh Hasina-led government. We have been harassed for nine years due to this false case filed by the police.
