3rd Space Exploration Olympiad held in Dhaka, 202 students take part

The third 'Space Exploration Olympiad' was held in Dhaka on Saturday, August 29, at the American International University Bangladesh (AIUB) campus to foster interest and curiosity in space science among children and adolescents. A total of 202 selected students from various parts of the country took part in the final round of the competition.

The competition, designed for students aged 6 to 16, was divided into four age-based categories. The subject matter was also determined according to age groups. Younger participants were given fundamental topics such as the solar system, planets, stars, rockets and satellites, while older students were tested on relatively complex subjects including space robotics, Mars rovers, space stations and future space technologies.

Before reaching the grand finale, participants went through multiple stages of online screening tests. These preliminary rounds were open to students from various regions of the country as well as Bangladeshi students residing abroad. Based on the results of the screening rounds, finalists were selected for the grand finale.

Speaking at the event, AIUB Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Saiful Islam said today's children will lead the country in future as scientists, engineers and innovators. Creating opportunities for students to learn complex subjects like space science with joy and interest would make knowledge acquisition more effective.

AIUB Associate Professor Dr Syed Ashraf Uddin said it is necessary to develop an interest in space and physics from childhood. Competitions like this encourage students to think beyond the traditional curriculum and explore new subjects. Ariful Hasan, president of the Space Innovation Camp, said the potential for future scientists and innovators lies in children and adolescents. One of the main objectives of the event is to nurture a scientific mindset among them and increase their interest in space science.

After the day-long competition, a total of 33 students were awarded prizes across the four categories. The organisers said there are plans to organise the competition on a larger scale in the future to further increase interest in space science and technology among children and adolescents.
