4 arrested for raping schoolgirl in Khagrachari
Police have arrested four men accused of raping a 14-year-old schoolgirl in Khagrachhari, as protests erupted demanding justice and swift punishment for those responsible.
The girl's father filed a case at Khagrachhari Sadar Police Station late Wednesday night (July 16), naming six individuals. Within hours, police detained four of the accused — Raman Hossain, 32, Emon Hossain, 25, Enayet Hossain, 35, and Saddam Hossain, 32. Two others, Md Munir Islam, 29 and Md Sohel Islam, 23, remain at large.
According to the case statement, the Class 8 student had gone to attend the Rath Yatra fair on June 27 and later stayed overnight at a relative's house. Around midnight, six men allegedly broke into the house, tied up the relative, and raped the girl.
The incident came to light after the victim attempted suicide on July 12 by consuming poison. She was admitted to Khagrachhari District Sadar Hospital in critical condition. After regaining consciousness, she disclosed the assault to her family.
Hospital physician Dr Ripol Bappi Chakma confirmed that the girl is physically stable but in severe mental trauma. "She is under close observation and receiving necessary medical and psychological care," he said.
Superintendent of Police Arefin Jewel said the victim's statement would be recorded and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining accused.
Meanwhile, local students and residents have staged demonstrations demanding justice. Protesters alleged that some of the accused are affiliated with the BNP. However, Khagrachhari District BNP General Secretary MN Afsar denied the claim, saying none of the accused are involved in party activities.
Authorities have assured the public that no one involved will be spared, regardless of political affiliation.
