4 detained over lynching of Ruplal, Pradip in Rangpur

Police have detained four individuals in connection with the brutal lynching deaths of a son-in-law and father-in-law in Taraganj upazila, Rangpur. The victims were accused of theft by a mob and were beaten to death on Saturday night.

The arrested suspects were apprehended from their homes in the Burirhat area late Sunday (August 10) and were subsequently sent to jail through the court on Monday.

The accused have been identified as Ebadat Hossain (35) from Balapur area of Sayar Union, Aktarul Islam (45) of Burirhat, Rafiqul Islam (40), and Mizanur Rahman (26) from Rahimapur. Police have filed charges against approximately 700 unknown individuals in relation to the case.

Officer-in-Charge MA Faruk of Taraganj Police Station stated, “We have detained four suspects believed to be involved in the lynching murder of Ruplal and his niece’s husband, Pradip Das. Both were killed on suspicion of theft. Investigations are ongoing, and efforts are underway to apprehend others involved.”

The incident took place on August 9 at Botoli in Burirhat when the victims were attacked by a mob accusing them of stealing. Following the incident, Smt. Malati alias Bharati Rani filed a murder case naming 500 to 700 unknown individuals as accused.

In response to the lynching, local authorities have increased administrative vigilance across the upazila to maintain law and order.
