4 including journalist assaulted for protesting harassment in Gazipur
Four individuals, including a journalist, were assaulted in Gazipur’s Kashimpur area after protesting against the harassment of some young women. The incident took place near the KPJ Specialized Hospital on Tuesday evening under the jurisdiction of Kashimpur Police Station.
The injured journalist, Rubel Ahmed Prince, 35, is a correspondent for Independent Television based in Savar. The others attacked were Saidur Rahman, 35, Yasin Ahmed, 36, and Shariful Islam, 35. All victims are currently receiving treatment at KPJ Specialized Hospital.
According to hospital sources, Rubel suffered a broken right hand, while Saidur sustained a head injury requiring three stitches. The others sustained injuries to various parts of their bodies.
Rubel Ahmed Prince told reporters that he was working on a report near Nobinagar via the Chandra highway when he noticed a young man harassing two to three girls in a nearby field adjacent to KPJ Specialized Hospital. Upon confronting the harasser to ask why he was troubling the girls, a mob of around 25-30 people, including the harasser, suddenly attacked Rubel and his companions with sticks.
The victims sought immediate medical treatment at KPJ Specialized Hospital. The attackers reportedly returned to the hospital and attempted to forcibly remove the injured men. Hospital security intervened and locked the gates. Police from Kashimpur and Ashulia stations arrived on the scene following an emergency call, causing the attackers to flee.
Rubel accused a local individual named Rimel and his followers of leading the assault.
Officer-in-Charge of Kashimpur Police Station, Md. Moniruzzaman, confirmed that the police are working to apprehend those responsible and bring them to justice.
