4 killed, 10 injured in trajic road crash in Dhaka
A road crash in the capital has killed at least four people and injured 10 others after a passenger bus lost control and collided with another bus in the capital's Nadda area.
The accident took place around 6:00am near Notun Bazar on Wednesday morning (May 27).
The deceased have been identified as Liza Begum, 38, Kabir Jomaddar, 47, Khushi Begum, 35, all from Mongla in Bagerhat, and another victim Robiul, 22, from Mirzaganj in Patuakhali.
According to eyewitnesses and police sources, an “Islam Paribahan” bus, which was coming from Patuakhali, was reportedly speeding when the driver lost control while crossing the road near Notun Bazar toward the Uttara-bound lane. The bus then hit the road divider, mounted it, and crashed into an “Akash Paribahan” bus that was travelling in the opposite direction from Gulistan to Uttara.
Police said the Gulistan-bound “Akash Paribahan” bus was carrying a large number of passengers, while the other bus had only a few passengers. One woman died on the spot, while others were declared dead at Kurmitola Hospital and later identified.
At least 10–12 passengers were injured, several of them critically, and are undergoing treatment at Kurmitola General Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Following the collision, the Akash Paribahan bus sustained severe damage, while traffic congestion spread across the area, causing severe disruption for Eid-bound passengers.
Nesar Uddin, sub-inspector (SI) of Vatara Police Station, said, "The bus driver and helper of the “Islam Paribahan” vehicle fled the scene after the crash.
"Additional police forces were deployed at the scene to bring the situation under control, and later units from Vatara Police Station joined the operation," he added.
An investigation into the incident is underway.
