4 killed as pickup truck overturns in Rangamati

Four people were killed and two others injured after a pickup truck carrying small traders overturned in Rangamati’s Manikchhari area early Sunday (August 16).

The accident took place around 5:30am as the traders were travelling to a weekly market in the area. The pickup reportedly lost control and overturned, leaving three passengers dead at the scene.

The deceased were identified as Megh Rani Chakma, 45, Shanti Ranjan Chakma, 60, Shantana Chakma, 40, and Shobha Chakma.

The injured were identified as Sumon Chakma, 45, and pickup driver Gyan Bikash Chakma, 50.

The bodies have been kept at a hospital morgue. All six people involved in the accident were small traders, according to local sources.

Dr Shawkat Akbar, resident physician at Rangamati General Hospital, said the victims were taken to the hospital, where three were declared dead. The three injured are receiving treatment.

Md Jasim Uddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Rangamati Kotwali Police Station, said, "Legal proceedings were underway."
