4 killed in Leguna-bus collision on Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway

Four passengers were killed and five others injured in a collision between a Leguna and an AC bus on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway in Chakaria, Cox's Bazar. The accident occurred around 6:30am on Thursday, August 13, in the Khutakhali Nayapara Baitul Mamur Jame Mosque area.

Eyewitnesses and local sources said a passenger Leguna (locally known as Jitu), heading to Chakaria from Eidgaon, collided with an AC bus of Lal-Sabuj Paribahan coming from the opposite direction in the Khutakhali Nayapara area. Several passengers of the Leguna were critically injured.

After the accident, locals rescued the injured and took them to Malumghat Christian Memorial Hospital and Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital. Four of them died while undergoing treatment.

The deceased are: Md Jasim Uddin, 25, son of late Matiur Rahman from Khutakhali Segunbagicha area in Chakaria; Md Shahed, 27, son of late Manjur Alam from Fulchhari Shiyapara; Mohammad Rafiq, 28, son of late Abul Kashem from Eidgaon upazila; and Md Ziabul Haque, 25, son of Aminul Haque.

The injured are: Ziabul Haque, 40, son of Abdul Samad from Khutakhali Notun Office Madrasapara; Md Sarwar, 19, son of Syed Alam from Napikhali area in Eidgaon upazila; Syed Alam, 50, son of Ali Mia; Md Delwar Hossain, 35, son of Badruddoza from Medhakachhapia village in Chakaria; and Syed Karim, 30, son of Md Rahmat Karim from Kirontali village in Teknaf.

Among the injured, Syed Karim is undergoing treatment at Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital. The other four have been admitted to Malumghat Christian Memorial Hospital.

Malumghat Highway Police Sub-Inspector Shamsuzzaman confirmed the accident and casualties. He said highway police have seized both the Leguna and the bus, but both drivers fled the scene.

Legal action is being taken in connection with the incident, he added.
