4 of a family killed in Sylhet landslide
Four members of the same family were killed in a landslide caused by continuous heavy rain in Bakhtiar Ghat village of Laxnaband Union, Golapganj, Sylhet, early Sunday (June 1).
The incident took place around 2:45am while Md Iaz Uddin and his family were asleep in their house.
According to the locals, a large section of earth collapsed onto the house, burying Iaz Uddin, his wife, son, and daughter. Locals initially attempted rescue but were unsuccessful.
Fire service units, led by Station Officer Titok Sikder, arrived around 4.00am and recovered three bodies. One person remains trapped under the debris.
Md Khalku, chairman of Lakkhanaband Union Parishad, allegedly said, "Despite notifying authorities shortly after the incident, rescue teams arrived in late on the spot."
Moniruzzaman Molla, acting officer-in-charge (OC) of Gopalganj Police Station, said "Heavy rain and fallen trees delayed rescue operations, with roads blocked and alternative routes used to reach the site."
Landslides were also reported the same night in Chowdhury Bazar and Biyanibazar, but no casualties were recorded.
