40 active Awami League members arrested in Dhaka

Dhaka Metropolitan Police have arrested 40 active members of the banned Awami League during raids across the capital over the past 24 hours, police said Wednesday (September 30).

The arrests were made as part of regular operations aimed at maintaining law and order and preventing crime, according to the DMP.

Legal proceedings against those arrested are underway, while police have not disclosed their identities.

Police said they have recently observed flash processions involving members of the banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations in different parts of Dhaka.

They also said cocktail explosions were reported at several locations in connection with such activities, prompting increased surveillance and intensified operations.

In the broader 24-hour operation, DMP arrested 401 people in different parts of the capital and filed 26 cases. The arrests were made by various DMP divisions, with the highest numbers reported from Tejgaon, Mirpur and Motijheel.

During the operations, police recovered a sword, a machete, a sharp circular blade attached to an iron rod and another iron rod. They also seized 95 yaba tablets, 70 grams of heroin and 668 grams of cannabis, along with a private car.

Police said the regular anti-crime operations will continue across the capital and that further legal action against those arrested is being taken in the respective cases.
