At least 40 people have been killed extrajudicially in the 13 months since the interim government assumed office, according to the human rights organisation Odhikar. The incidents occurred between August 9, 2024, and September 30, 2025. Of these, 11 killings took place between July and September this year.

The findings were revealed in the organisation’s latest report published on Thursday, October 30. Odhikar stated that the report was prepared based on information from various human rights groups and analysis of reports published in the media.

The Awami League government was ousted from power on August 5, 2024, following massive public protests. Three days later, on August 8, an interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus took charge.

According to Odhikar, among the 40 incidents of extrajudicial killings in these 13 months, 19 people were shot dead, 14 were tortured to death, and seven were beaten to death while in custody. During the July–September period alone, seven people were allegedly killed by the joint forces, three by the police, and one by members of the army.

During this time, at least 27 people died in prisons, bringing the total number of custodial deaths during the interim government to 88.

The report also stated that between August 2024 and September 2025, at least 35 Bangladeshis were killed in shootings by India’s Border Security Force (BSF). Of these, 10 deaths occurred between July and September alone. Additionally, since May this year, India has pushed back at least 2,333 Bangladeshis across different border points.

Odhikar further reported that 46 people were killed in political violence between July and September. The total number of deaths from political violence during the 13 months of the interim government has risen to 281.

During the same period, 687 women and girls were subjected to rape, 188 of which occurred between July and September this year.

The report added that 153 people were beaten to death during the tenure of the interim government, including 45 such incidents recorded between July and September 2025.
