Severe heat has driven up electricity demand in Chapainawabganj, creating a power shortfall of up to 40 per cent and causing increased load shedding across the district.

Residents in all five upazilas, including the district town, are facing frequent outages, with rural areas reportedly experiencing more severe disruptions.

Officials from the power sector said supply has not kept pace with rising demand, forcing authorities to implement load shedding in different areas.

According to the Northern Electricity Supply Company (NESCO), demand in the town currently stands at around 31–32 megawatts, while supply is limited to 25–26 megawatts, leaving a deficit of 5–6 megawatts.

NESCO Chapainawabganj Executive Engineer Md. Aliul Azim said the gap in supply is directly responsible for the ongoing load shedding.

Meanwhile, Chapainawabganj Palli Bidyut Samity General Manager Howladar Md. Fazlur Rahman said electricity demand began rising sharply in early April due to increased heat, alongside additional consumption for irrigation during the Boro paddy season.

He added that the district is currently receiving 30–40 percent less electricity than required, and load shedding is being carried out based on specific schedules and area needs.

Officials said the situation may worsen further depending on future demand and supply conditions.
