406mm rain in Feni, Muhuri and Silonia rivers cross danger levels
Feni experienced 406 millimeters of rainfall in the past 24 hours, marking the highest level in recent years. Persistent rain combined with water flowing from upstream areas in India has pushed the water levels of the Muhuri and Silonia rivers above the danger threshold, raising fears of potential flooding in the district.
Abul Kashem, Sub-Divisional Engineer of the Feni Water Development Board, confirmed the matter on Tuesday afternoon (8 July). He said, “By 4:00 pm, the water level of the Muhuri River was 65 centimeters above the danger mark. This unusual rise has created a risk of flooding. Authorities have already been alerted about the vulnerable embankments.”
Md. Mojibur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Feni Weather Office, said, “Feni district has been experiencing moderate to heavy rainfall for the past two days. As of 3.00pm on Tuesday, 406 millimeters of rain were recorded in 24 hours, the highest in recent years. The Meteorological Department has said that this rainfall may continue for the next 2 to 3 days.”
Due to heavy rain, waterlogging has occurred in several areas of Feni town, including Daktarpara, Shahid Shahidullah Kaiser Sarak, Academy, Puraton Registry Office, Shaheen Academy area, Pathanbari, Nazir Road, Mizan Road, Sadar Hospital Mor, and Petrobangla area. Low-lying roads in many places have been submerged, and locals have reported damage to shops and homes due to water entering.
Golam Md. Baten, Administrator of Feni Municipality and Deputy Director of the Local Government Department, said, “Waterlogging has occurred in the town due to heavy rainfall and insufficient drainage systems. However, the water will drain quickly once the rain stops.” He also mentioned that seven teams from the municipality are already working to clear the waterlogging.
