4.3 magnitude earthquake jolts Sylhet border region
A magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck the Bangladesh–India border region near Sylhet on Sunday morning (April 12), shaking parts of northeastern Bangladesh.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the tremor occurred at 9:21am, with the epicentre located near Silchar in India’s Assam state.
However, no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage were received.
The event follows a 4.9 magnitude earthquake that hit the same region on April 7, which was also felt in parts of Sylhet.
Seismologists say the increasing frequency of tremors in the region is a concerning trend, urging closer monitoring of seismic activity in the northeastern fault zone.
Bangladesh has experienced several notable earthquakes in recent months, including a 5.7 magnitude quake in Madhabdi of Narsingdi on November 21 last year, which caused widespread panic and resulted in at least 10 deaths and hundreds of injuries.
