4.8 magnitude earthquake jolts Assam, also shakes Bangladesh

A moderate earthquake was felt in the northeastern border area of ​​the country. The tremor hit the area adjacent to Silchar in the Indian state of Assam on Tuesday (April 7) afternoon. The Earthquake Observation and Research Center of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said that its magnitude was 4.8 on the Richter scale.

According to the notification of the Meteorological Department, the epicenter of the earthquake was in the Indian state of Assam at latitude 24.81° North and longitude 92.62° East. Its distance from the main epicenter located in Agargaon, Dhaka was about 254 kilometers northeast. The impact of the earthquake was also felt in Sylhet and border areas, about 350 kilometers from Dhaka.

The United States Geological Survey, USGS, said that the epicenter of the earthquake was 11 kilometers northwest of Silchar city and its depth was 10 kilometers from the surface. Apart from Silchar, the tremor was felt in various places in Assam and border areas including Sylhet and Moulvibazar in Bangladesh. However, no damage or casualties have been reported so far.
