491 arrested in Dhaka in 24 hours crackdown

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested 491 people in the capital over the past 24 hours during a series of routine operations, while 39 cases were filed during the period.

Niaz Mehedi, additional deputy commissioner of the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, confirmed the arrests on Friday (August 28).

The arrests were made across the DMP’s nine divisions, with the highest number recorded in the Mirpur division.

Mirpur police arrested 156 people, followed by Tejgaon with 59, Gulshan with 59, Uttara with 56, Wari and Motijheel with 48 each, Lalbagh with 41, Ramna with 20 and the Detective Branch with four.

During the operations, police also recovered a foreign-made revolver, one round of ammunition, four spent cartridges, 10,071 yaba tablets, 120 grams of cannabis and 44 grams of heroin.

Other items recovered included a Chinese axe, a sickle, a GI pipe, a monitor, a CPU and six mobile phones. Police also rescued one person described as a victim.

Niaz Mehedi said the arrests and recoveries were made during regular operations conducted in different police station areas across the capital.

Legal proceedings against those arrested are underway, he added.
