4-year-old girl found dead in clay oven in Mymensingh, two detained

Police recovered the body of a four-year-old girl from a clay oven near her home in Ishwarganj Upazila of Mymensingh on Thursday.

The deceased, Mariam Akter, went missing earlier in the day from her house in Maruakhali village under Sarisha Union. Family members searched nearby areas but failed to locate her. Her body was later found in a clay oven adjacent to the house before evening.

Mariam was the only daughter of Mizanur Rahman and Rima Akter. The incident, which occurred just a day before Eid, has cast a pall of grief over the family and the locality.

According to relatives, the child had been wearing a silver chain. Family members suspect she may have been strangled when she cried out during an attempted snatching, after which her body was hidden in the oven.

Rabiul Azam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ishwarganj Police Station, said, "Police recovered the body and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for autopsy."

"A 16-year-old boy and his father have been taken into custody for questioning, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of the killing," he added.
