Five Bangladeshi have been injured so far in a major fire that killed at least 21 people and injured several others in a building in New Delhi. The Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi said this on Wednesday (June 3).

The High Commission said that three of the injured Bangladeshis are receiving treatment at Max Hospital in Saket and the other two at Safdarjung Hospital. The mission is in regular touch with the local authorities to closely monitor their physical condition and overall situation.

The High Commission has expressed deep grief over the tragic fire in Delhi's Malviya Nagar. The message expressed sincere condolences to the families of the deceased and sympathies to all those affected. While wishing the injured a speedy recovery, Bangladesh praised the tireless efforts of rescue and emergency response personnel.

According to a report by the news agency AP, the building in the Malviya Nagar area in the southern part of the city had a restaurant on the ground floor and a hotel on the upper floors. The area is densely populated and popular with students and young professionals.

According to a statement from Delhi Police, eight fire engines brought the fire under control and more than 40 people were rescued and taken to nearby hospitals. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Images from the scene showed thick black smoke billowing from the building and firefighters trying to put out the flames. Some trapped inside were seen hanging from windows as the fire and smoke spread. Local residents also joined the rescue efforts; they helped pull out the trapped people and evacuate the injured to safety.

Some of the victims were foreigners who had traveled to India for medical treatment, AP reported, citing local media. Many foreign patients travel to New Delhi for treatment and stay in nearby hotels or residential buildings during their travels.
