5 Bangladeshis killed in gas cylinder explosion in Maldives

Five Bangladeshi workers have been killed in a devastating gas cylinder explosion at a guest house of a construction site in Digura Island, Maldives. Two others are undergoing treatment with severe burns. The incident occurred on Friday morning, March 13.

According to local sources, seven people were rescued with severe burns from inside the guest house after the explosion, five of whom later died while undergoing treatment. The deceased are: Taj Uddin Islam, Md Sadar Ali, Md Robin Molla, Safiqul Islam and Md Noornabi Sarkar. The two critically injured are Jamal Uddin and Saddam Hossain.

Local sources indicate that the guest house has been severely damaged by the explosion.

Bangladesh High Commission Labour Counsellor in Maldives Md Sohel Parvez said one of the injured has been placed in the ICU and the other in the emergency department. Their condition is critical. Additionally, initiatives are being taken to quickly send the bodies of the deceased to their families.

Local administration has begun investigating the actual cause of the accident. This tragic incident has cast a shadow of grief over the Bangladeshi expatriate community in Maldives.
