Five people, including three children, have suffered burns from fireworks and firecrackers during celebrations to mark New Year’s Eve.

All of them were rushed to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka for treatment. One of the children was admitted to the hospital as his condition may be critical.

An 8-year-old child suffered burns on 15 percent of his body, according to Dr Shaon Bin Rahman, resident doctor at the emergency department of the institute on Wednesday.

In addition, 12-year-old Shifan Mollik suffered burns on 1 percent of his body, 20-year-old Samrat on 1 percent of his body, 43-year-old Shantar on 2 percent of his body and 3-year-old Tafsir on 2 percent of his body.

The victims came in from different parts of Dhaka, Shaon said.

“They suffered burns while setting off fireworks and crackers on the night of Dec 31. One of them suffered burns on 15 percent of his body. If he was an adult, he would have been out of danger. But, as he is a child, his condition is a bit worrying. The rest were released after receiving first aid.”
