5 coaches of freight train derailed in Tongi
The incident occurred when five coaches of a freight train heading towards Chittagong derailed at Tongi in Gazipur.
As a result, train operations on the Dhaka-Chittagong railway have been temporarily halted. The derailment took place in the Abdullahpur area, just before the train was about to cross the Turag river bridge in Tongi, at approximately 10:15 am on Monday, December 25.
SI Chhotan Sharma, the in-charge of Tongi Railway Police Outpost, stated that the freight train derailed in the Dhaka section near the bridge, shortly after passing Tongi station. Currently, efforts are underway to repair the railway line and rescue the train. However, it will take some time for the train services to return to normal.
He added that approximately one kilometer of the railway line has been damaged as a result of this incident.
