5 Jamaat activists detained over alleged breach of electoral code of conduct

Police have detained five individuals on allegations of violating the electoral code of conduct at the Mohammadpur Upazila Health Complex in Magura. The detentions were made at around 11:00pm on Thursday (February 5).

Those detained are Hossain Ahmed Kabul, ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Mohammadpur upazila unit from Mohammadpur Sadar Union; Mukul Hossain, president of Ward No. 6 of the Sadar Union; Obaidullah bin Hafizar; Habibullah; and Ershad.

Mohammadpur Police Station officer-in-charge Ashrafuzzaman said that at around 11:00pm on Thursday night, the individuals were distributing blankets among patients and their relatives at the Mohammadpur Upazila Health Complex while seeking votes in favour of Jamaat-e-Islami-nominated candidate Md Mushtarshed Billah Baker, contesting the Magura-2 constituency with the “scales” symbol. They were taken into police custody at that time.

Executive Magistrate Shahnur Zaman said that legal action would be taken in accordance with the law if the allegations are proven. If the allegations are found to be false, they will be released through the court.
