5 killed in separate accidents in Jhenaidah
Five people, including two couples, have been killed in separate accidents in Jhenaidah on Wednesday, August 26. The accidents occurred within a few hours between morning and noon.
Among the deceased are army personnel Sohel Kazi (35) and his wife Jannatul Ferdous Tuli (28), who were killed in a bus crash in the bypass area of Jhenaidah town. The accident took place around 11am in the Bhutiyargati Gas Depot area.
Locals said Tuli was travelling with her husband Sohel on a motorcycle from Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital towards the terminal. On the way, the motorcycle skidded and fell on the road while trying to avoid a collision with a rickshaw coming from a side road. At that time, a bus of Garai Transport, heading from Kushtia to Khulna, ran over them. Tuli died on the spot.
Severely injured Sohel was rescued by fire service personnel and admitted to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital. Later, as his condition deteriorated, he was taken to Jashore CMH where he died under treatment around noon.
Sohel Kazi's ancestral home is in Lakshmipasha village under Lohagara upazila of Narail. He was serving as an instructor at a branch of Bangladesh Military Academy (BMA) in Chattogram.
Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station OC Md Asaduzzaman confirmed that Tuli died on the spot and army personnel Sohel Kazi died at hospital while undergoing treatment.
In another incident, a couple died from electrocution while using a grass-cutting machine for cattle in Madhabpur village of Manoharpur union in Shailkupa upazila. They were identified as Amarendra Nath Bhaumik (70) and his wife Mina Bhaumik (60).
Neighbours said Amarendra Nath went to cut grass for cattle using the machine in the morning. He was electrocuted, and when his wife Mina rushed to save him, she too was electrocuted. Both died on the spot.
Dr Asaduzzaman Joha, a physician at the emergency department of Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex, confirmed that the couple died from electrocution. Relatives brought their bodies to the hospital around 7:30am.
Police visited the spot after learning of the incident. Shailkupa Police Station OC Humayun Kabir Mollah said legal action was being taken.
Additionally, an unidentified person was killed after being hit by a train in the point area on the west side of Mubarakganj Railway Station in Kaliganj. The elderly man, around 70 years old, was injured after being struck by the Sagardari Down Train travelling from Rajshahi to Khulna around 10:45am.
Mubarakganj Railway Station Master Sheikh Shahjahan Ali said the man was injured after being hit by the train around 10:40am. Fire service personnel rescued him after being informed by locals and took him to hospital, where he died under treatment.
