5 to walk gallows for killing easy-bike driver in Jashore

A Jashore court has sentenced five accused to death in a murder case filed over the killing of an easy-bike driver, Mofizur Rahman, hailed from Hamidpur in the district.

Additional Sessions Judge Farzana Yasmin passed the order on Monday (May 20) afternoon.

Three of the five accused were present in the court when the verdict was announced, said public prosecutor Asaduzzaman.

The accused are Ikhtiyar Biswas, son of Moksed Ali Biswas of Hamidpur Biswaspara village under Sadar upazila, Khorshed Alam, son of late Hashim Sardar of Lakshanpur village of Manirampur upazila, Kajal, son of Jalal Uddin of Hamidpur Dakshinpara village.

The convicted fugitives are Gopal Ghosh, son of Balaram Ghosh of Dhanghata village of Sadar upazila and Enamul, son of Mofazel of Chanpara village.

According to case statement, on June 22, 2011, Mofizur Rahman was returning home from the old central bus stand (Monihar Mor) with his helper Nayan around 11:30pm. Dropping his helper Nayan at Hamidpur on the way, he headed home. Since then he could not be found. Two days later, on the morning of June 24, his body was recovered from a pond near the Hamidpur garbage dump.

Later, Ayesha Begum, the wife of the victim, filed a case against the unknown accused with Kotwali police station.

Investigating officer of the case sub-inspector Nasir Uddin arrested Ikhtiar and Khorshed at the beginning of the investigation. Later, they confessed to the murder in the court. The names of the other three accused came up in their statement.

After the long trial proceedings, the judge sentenced all five accused to death on the day of the verdict in the case.

PP Asaduzzaman has expressed satisfaction on behalf of the state. On the other hand, the defense lawyers said that they will appeal against the verdict in the High Court.
