6 burnt in coal grinder blast in Narayanganj

Six workers were burned in an explosion at the coal mill of the Bashundhara Cement factory in Modonpur under Bandar upazila of Narayanganj.

The blast took place during routine work on Saturday evening (Novemember 22).

The injured are Atikur Rahman, 42, Torab Ali, 55, Ferdous, 35, Tajul Islam, 35, Kamal Hossain, 45 and Nahid Hasan, 22.

Foollowing the blast, all of the injured were admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka around 9.00pm.

Mobarak Hossain, a worker at the mill, said the coal grinder suddenly exploded, causing sparks to fly and burn the workers.

Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman of the burn institute said Nahid sustained 40% burns, Atikur 27%, Kamal 26%, Torab 16%, Tajul 12% and Ferdous 10%. All have airway injuries.

Bandar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mostafizur Rahman and Narayanganj Fire Service official Abdullah Al Arefin said the explosion caused hot coal to scatter, burning the workers.

The factory authorities have not commented on the incident.
