6 killed in bus crash on Dhaka–Barishal highway

Six people were killed and several others injured after a passenger bus ran over an easybike in Madaripur. The accident occurred around 5:30 pm on Sunday, January 18, at the Mostafapur Millgate area on the Dhaka–Barishal highway.

Fire Service headquarters confirmed the deaths of six people in a brief message.

The identity of one of the deceased has been confirmed. He was Ruman, son of Shah Alam from Ghatakchar area of Kendua union in Madaripur Sadar upazila.

Local sources said a passenger bus of Sarbik Paribahan was travelling from Madaripur to Dhaka. When it reached the Millgate area, it ran over a passenger easybike. The easybike was crushed and the bus plunged into a roadside ditch. Three people were killed on the spot and many others were injured.

The injured were rescued by locals and taken to Madaripur 250-bed district hospital, where three more people later died. Police and fire service rescue operations are still ongoing.

Officer-in-charge of Mostafapur Highway Police Station Mamun Al Rashid said he was heading to the scene and that further details would be provided later.
