6 more children die of measles symptoms as nationwide death toll surpasses 800

The measles outbreak continues to worsen, with six more children succumbing to the disease and its symptoms in the last 24 hours, pushing the total death toll to 805 since March 15 this year. Health authorities have expressed concern as over a thousand new people were infected during the same period.

According to the latest report released by the Directorate General of Health Services, 1,037 new cases were recorded in the past day on Wednesday. Of these, 133 were confirmed as measles through testing, while 904 showed symptoms of the disease.

Official figures show that the total number of confirmed measles patients in the country has reached 14,841. Since March 15, symptoms of measles have appeared in 120,352 people. During this period, 103,078 patients were admitted to hospitals, and more than 99,000 of them have recovered and been discharged after treatment.

The World Health Organization’s latest data indicates that Bangladesh tops the global list of countries with the highest number of measles infections over the past six months. From December last year to May this year, 42,174 people in Bangladesh were affected by measles or its symptoms. This is the highest figure among 165 countries worldwide, where a total of 186,000 cases were reported.

India ranks second with 26,607 cases, followed by Yemen with 14,521, Mexico with 12,495, Pakistan with 11,037, Cameroon with 9,653, Kazakhstan with 7,730, Guatemala with 6,832, Angola with 6,815, and Sudan with 5,766.

The infection has been spreading rapidly among children since the beginning of this year, with both cases and deaths continuing to rise steadily. The Directorate General of Health Services has been regularly publishing updates on the measles situation since March 15.
