Parents beaten after not finding son suspected of being a thief, mother commits suicide over insult

In Jamalpur Sadar Upazila, there have been allegations that a young man was picked up by his parents and beaten in a court of law on charges of stealing a cow without being found. Unable to bear the insult in this incident, a woman named Josna Banu committed suicide, her relatives allege.

The incident took place on Thursday (March 26) morning in Khalilhata area of Kendua Union of the upazila. The deceased Josna Banu is the wife of Suruzzaman of the area.

According to police and local sources, an attempt was made to steal a cow at the house of UP member Nayeb Ali in the area around 2 am on Wednesday. Due to this, a group led by UP member Nayeb Ali went to Suruzzaman's house around 3 am and wanted to arrest his son Sujan Mia on suspicion of being a thief. When he was not found, his parents were arrested and taken away.

Later, a local court was held on the matter around 10 am on Thursday. Two others, Tota Mia and Sohel Rana, were summoned and beaten on suspicion of being thieves. It is alleged that their family members were also beaten during this time.

Relatives claim that Josna Banu committed suicide after returning home after being unable to bear the insult during the arbitration.

Local resident Mukhles said that the parents were arrested and beaten after not finding their son on charges of theft. It is believed that the woman committed suicide because she could not bear the insult.

Sohel Rana's father Suruzzaman alleged that they had a dispute with the Nayeb Alis over their land, which is pending in court. They were framed as thieves and tortured because of that dispute.

However, UP member Nayeb Ali denied the allegations and said that the prominent people of the area took the initiative to resolve the matter based on the complaint of the neighbor. At that time, some people got agitated and beat them up a little, but he tried to stop them.

Jamalpur Sadar Police Station Sub-Inspector Khairuzzaman said that the body was recovered from the scene after receiving a call to the national emergency service 999. It has been sent for autopsy and the incident is under investigation. Legal action will be taken after the investigation is completed.
