6 UPDF members detained in Bandarban

Six members of the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF - Gonotantrik) have been detained by the Bangladesh Army in Bandarban on charges of involvement in extortion, kidnapping, and other criminal activities.

The arrests were made during a coordinated military operation in multiple areas, including Jhajtukhamar and Talukder Para, based on intelligence reports of escalating criminal activities linked to the group.

The army later handed the detainees over to Bandarban Sadar Police on Tuesday night.

The arrested individuals includes Ajit Chakma, 39, Ripon Chakma, 44, Anion Chakma, 23, Wayse Marma, 28, Bir Kumar Tripura, 29, and Sukhen Tanchangya, 25. All are alleged to be active members of the UPDF (Democratic).

According to law enforcement agencies, the group has been involved in a series of criminal operations, including systematic extortion and abduction, particularly along major roads such as Lama–Suwalok Road, Chimbuk Road, Balaghata–Rangamati Rajbila Road, and Rowangchhari–Baghmara Road.

Following preliminary interrogation, an extortion case was filed against the suspects, and legal proceedings have been initiated.

Confirming the arrests, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bandarban Sadar Police Station, Masud Parvez said, "The army handed over six UPDF Democratic Party members involved in extortion and terrorist activities. A formal case has been registered, and they will be produced before the court following due legal procedures."
