60km tailback on Dhaka-Tangail highway
Due to the pressure of additional vehicles and continuous rain, a severe traffic jam has been created on the Dhaka-Tangail-Jamuna Bridge highway along an area of about 60 kilometers. The traffic jam, which started late on Wednesday night, is still ongoing.
Sources said that traffic movement is being severely disrupted at some places on the Jamuna Bridge due to accidents. The authorities closed the toll plaza for some time due to the time it took to remove the accident-affected vehicles with a wrecker. Later, vehicles started moving slowly from 8 am. Currently, this traffic jam has reached from Chandra in Gazipur to the middle of the Jamuna Bridge via Elenga in Tangail.
Police and Jamuna Bridge authorities said that a long queue of vehicles had formed on the highway since late at night due to the storm. Within that queue, several vehicles broke down on the Jamuna Bridge and the speed of vehicles on the highway decreased due to road accidents. This effect is expected to remain in the Jamuna Bridge area throughout the night. In addition, since the Eid holidays began in most of the industries in Gazipur on Tuesday, there was a severe traffic jam in the area of about 15 kilometers from Bhogra to Chandra Trimor on the Dhaka-Tangail highway since the morning. However, after suffering all night, this part of Gazipur has started to return to normal since Wednesday morning.
According to the Highway Police, about 3 million people have already left for their respective destinations.
Executive Engineer of the Jamuna Bridge Site Office Syed Riaz Uddin said, "There is a huge pressure of vehicles. Vehicles are crossing through 18 booths at both ends of the bridge. Out of these, two booths have been made for motorcycles."
Regarding the steps taken to resolve the traffic jam, Tangail Traffic Inspector Anisur Rahman said, "The movement of vehicles has been slow due to the excess pressure of vehicles, accidents on the bridge, and also due to rain. Vehicles have been moving slowly since 8 am. "To ease traffic congestion, the district police is dividing the highway into four sectors and performing its duties. Maximum efforts are being made to ensure that people heading home for Eid can travel without any problems."
