60kmph squalls loom as low turns into depression over Bay

A strengthening low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has raised the risk of squally winds, thunderstorms and heavy rain across Bangladesh’s coastal and southern regions, prompting the Meteorological Department to issue a local warning signal at four seaports.

Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra ports have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal No. 3 as the well-marked low has intensified into a land depression.

The weather office said Rajshahi, Jashore, Kushtia, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar may experience temporary squalls accompanied by rain or thunderstorms. Winds from the south or southeast could reach 45–60 kilometres per hour in these areas, prompting a No. 1 warning signal at the river ports.

Meanwhile, many areas of Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, along with some parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions, may see light to moderate rain with gusty winds. Some areas could also receive moderate to heavy rainfall.

Day and night temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged nationwide, although daytime temperatures in Dhaka may fall slightly because of rain. The capital recorded 27.4°C at 6am today.

Fishing boats and trawlers operating in the North Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and navigate cautiously until further notice.
