624 detained as police launch overnight crackdown across Cumilla

Police detained 624 people for questioning during an overnight crackdown across all 18 police stations in Cumilla district, targeting alleged juvenile gang activity and other crimes, officials said.

The coordinated operation was conducted on Wednesday night at locations identified as hotspots for groups of teenagers and young men allegedly involved in disorder and criminal activities.

Cumilla Additional Superintendent of Police and media officer Lutfur Rahman confirmed the operation on Thursday (September 24), saying the detainees were taken into custody for questioning and background checks.

“Information gathered during the operation is being verified, and legal action will be taken where necessary,” he said.

The operation was carried out on the instructions of Cumilla Superintendent of Police Anisuzzaman amid concerns over the growing involvement of teenagers in criminal activities, police said.

Officers are also checking whether those detained have previous links to crimes.

Police said similar operations will continue across the district to prevent teenagers from becoming involved in criminal activities.

The crackdown comes amid public concern over alleged juvenile gang activity in Cumilla following the killing of 13-year-old Oprotim, the son of Cumilla University teacher Nahida Begum.

The killing triggered widespread discussion and anger over juvenile crime in the district.
