7 Awami League activists held in Banani with torches, banner
Police from Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Banani Police Station have detained seven individuals linked to the now-banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations while they were attempting to hold a torchlight procession in the capital's Banani area.
The detainees are: Md Arif (19), Md Shakil Ahmed (19), Ashik Ahmed Mostafa (19) and four juveniles.
They were arrested during a raid on the opposite side of the Army Stadium in Banani late on Thursday, August 6.
DMP ADC (Media) Niaz Mehedi, quoting Banani Police Station, said a police team learned that a group of around 100-120 people had gathered with torches on the Dhaka-Mymensingh (outgoing) highway, opposite the Army Stadium near the Sainik Club, intending to hold a procession. Police later detained seven individuals from the scene for their alleged involvement in subversive activities.
He further said 70 torches, one banner and 77 face masks were recovered from them. Other unidentified individuals managed to flee the scene during the operation.
