7-year-old admitted to hospital after madrasa teacher's beating in Bagerhat

A seven-year-old residential student of Darus Sunnah Madrasa in Shoronkhola upazila of Bagerhat has been allegedly severely beaten by a teacher for failing to recite his lessons. The child, identified as Azizul, has sustained black and blue bruises across his body and has been admitted to Shoronkhola Upazila Health Complex.

The child's grandmother, Selina Begum, filed a written complaint with Shoronkhola Police Station on Friday morning (August 28) over the incident.

Family sources said Azizul is a residential student at Darus Sunnah Madrasa at Rayenda Bazar in Shoronkhola upazila. On August 25, teacher Kamrul Islam allegedly beat him for failing to recite his lessons. The child suffered bruises across his body and could not sleep at night due to pain. He was later admitted to Shoronkhola Upazila Health Complex on Thursday (August 27) afternoon.

Azizul is the son of Sujan Howlader and Marufa Begum of West Khada village in Shoronkhola. His parents live in Dhaka for work, and he is looked after by his grandmother at home. She has demanded justice against the teacher.

Multiple attempts to contact the accused teacher, Kamrul Islam, over phone for comment were unsuccessful.

Darus Sunnah Madrasa Director Maulana Sifatullah described the incident as unfortunate and said efforts were underway to resolve the matter with the student's guardians.

Dr Masum Billah, medical officer at the emergency department of Shoronkhola Upazila Health Complex, said Azizul was admitted to the hospital around 1:30pm on Thursday with bruises from the beating across his body.

Shoronkhola Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rokeya Khanam said police visited the child at the hospital after receiving information. The grandmother filed a written complaint on Friday morning, and legal action would be taken after investigation.
