8 killed, 25 injured in head-on bus collision on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway

At least eight people were killed and 25 others injured after two passenger buses collided head-on on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Osmaninagar of Sylhet, on Friday morning (August 7).

The crash occurred at around 7:30am in the Kashikapan area when a Bengal Paribahan bus travelling toward Sylhet collided with a Unique Paribahan bus heading to Dhaka, according to police and eyewitnesses.

The impact sent the Unique Paribahan bus plunging into a roadside ditch, leaving eight passengers dead at the scene. The force of the collision also left dozens of passengers trapped inside the wreckage before locals and emergency responders launched rescue efforts.

At least 25 injured passengers were rescued and taken to nearby hospitals, while those critically hurt were shifted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where they remain under treatment.

Golam Mostafa, officer-in-charge (OC) of Osmaninagar Police Station, confirmed the death toll, saying rescue operations began immediately after the crash.

"The identities of the deceased and injured are yet to confirm. Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the collision," he added.
