Eight police officers have been suspended in Chattogram for releasing a police member after recovering yaba from his possession. They are also accused of misappropriating the seized drugs.

The suspension was ordered on Monday, January 5, by the Chattogram Metropolitan Police commissioner.

Those suspended are Bakalia police station sub-inspector Mohammad Al-Amin Sarkar, sub-inspector Mohammad Amir Hossain, currently posted at Kotwali police station, assistant sub-inspectors Saiful Alam, Md Ziaur Rahman, Md Saddam Hossain and Enamul Haque, constable Md Rashedul Hasan Bhuiyan and female constable Umme Habiba.

Police said the action was taken under rule 880 of the Police Regulations of Bengal on charges of misappropriating narcotics, providing false and misleading information to senior authorities and disobeying lawful orders.

According to police, on December 8 last year, a bus of Desh Travels travelling from Cox’s Bazar to Dhaka was searched at a checkpoint in the New Bridge area of the city. Around 80,000 to 100,000 yaba pills were recovered from a trolley bag belonging to Cox’s Bazar district police constable Md Imtiaz Hossain.

It is alleged that the recovered yaba was misappropriated without following legal procedures and the constable was released around 3:30am.
