8 students temporarily suspended over ragging allegations in JU

The Jahangirnagar University (JU) administration has temporarily suspended eight students from the 54th batch of the Department of Physics following allegations of ragging fresher students.

The information was disclosed through an office order signed by the university's Acting Registrar, A B M Azizur Rahman, on Tuesday (July 21).

According to the office order, on the night of July 20 between 10pm and 3am, several students from the 54th batch of the Physics Department subjected fresher students from the 55th batch of the same department to inhuman torture, offensive language, and forced squatting while holding their ears. The incident took place in the Manpura area, located on the west side of Sher-e-Bangla A. K. Fazlul Huq Hall.

Under Section 5(6) of the University Student Discipline Ordinance 2018, participating in teasing, ragging, or abusive activities anywhere within the university halls, departments, or campus is strictly prohibited. The accused students were temporarily suspended for violating this regulation.

The temporarily suspended students are Md. Fazle Hasan Fahad, Md. Al-Amin Hossain, Md. Zahid Hasan, Md. Faisal Ahmed, Md. Mahmudul Hasan Khan Akib, Md. Mahmudul Amin Siam, Md. Mostafizur Rahman, and Syed Sakib Ahmed Ratul.

The university administration stated that this action was taken following primary verification of the allegations. Further necessary steps will be taken in accordance with university regulations upon the conclusion of the upcoming investigation.
