8 workers burnt in steel mill boiler explosion in Dhaka
Eight workers have been burnt in a boiler explosion at a steel mill in Shyampur, capital. Two of the injured have been admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
The accident occurred around 9:00 am on Wednesday, April 1, at Dhaka Mesh RRRM Steel Mill in Shyampur.
The injured workers are Md Hira, 35; Manik Mia, 45; Khalilur Rahman, 56; Rajab Ali, 29; Matiur Rahman, 22; Ershad Mia, 45; Liton, 32; and Yusuf, 40.
Workers said they were melting iron in the factory's boiler in the morning when an explosion occurred due to mixing of good and bad iron together. Molten iron splashed onto their bodies, causing burns. Co-workers rescued them and took them to the National Burn Institute.
Resident Surgeon of the emergency department at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery Dr Shaon Bin Rahman said Manik Mia suffered 40 per cent burns, while Hira suffered 17 per cent burns. The others sustained burns ranging from 4 to 11 per cent. Manik has been admitted to the hospital, and Hira is under observation. The others were discharged after primary treatment.
