80kph nor’westers likely to hit 5 regions today
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast thunderstorms and nor’wester winds of up to 80 km/h in five regions, prompting cautionary signals at inland river ports.
In a special bulletin valid until 6:00pm Monday (April 27), the agency said Rangpur, Bogura, Tangail, Mymensingh and Sylhet may experience temporary gusty or squally winds from the west or northwest at speeds of 60–80 km/h. River ports in these regions have been advised to hoist signal No. 2.
Meanwhile, Dhaka, Madaripur, Faridpur, Cumilla, Noakhali, Barishal, Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar may see winds of 45–60 km/h, with river ports instructed to display signal No. 1.
A separate advisory warned of active cloud formation over northern areas, which could bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions over the next few days.
Rainfall of 44–88 mm or more within 24 hours may cause temporary waterlogging, particularly in low-lying and hilly areas, the weather office said.
