87 fishermen arrested for catching mother-hilsa

A total of 87 fishermen were arrested in a separate operation by the task force and the naval police, for catching mother hilsa in the sanctuary area of Padma-Meghna river in ​​Chandpur, violating the ban. 83 fishermen have been caught by the naval police and the rest were arrested by the Sadar Upazila Task Force.

MD Kamruzzaman, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chandpur Naval Station, confirmed the matter on Wednesday (October 25). The OC said, 83 fishermen were detained in the last 24 hours during the operation of the naval police in the area. Among them, 27 people were sentenced to different terms, 4 people were fined 1000 taka, and 14 were released on bond as they were minors. The remaining 38 fishermen have been sent to jail with regular cases.

Apart from this, 15 cases have been registered in these connections. 20 lakh meters of fishing net, 452 kg of hilsa, 27 fishing boats were seized. OC Kamruzzaman said that the seized hilsa was distributed to the local orphanage, while nets were burnt.

Meanwhile, Tanjimul Islam, senior fisheries officer of Sadar Upazila Task Force, said that 4 fishermen were arrested in the operation of Chandpur Sadar Task Force in the last 24 hours. Executive Magistrate Reshma Khatun sentenced them to 15 days imprisonment in mobile court. Apart from this, 5 thousand meters of fishing net and a fishing boat were seized. Separate teams of the Coast Guard and Naval Police assisted in the operation.
